With the increased focus around the world to protect the environment it has become imperative that businesses take responsibility for their day-to-day activities and how these affect the planet.
At H2H we are always mindful of reducing our impact on the environment and that we should promote green policies within all areas of our business wherever possible.
Reduced travel & emissions
One big focus on reducing environmental impact is to reduce the amount of emissions from vehicles such as cars, trucks and public transport being released into the atmosphere.
At H2H we take this into consideration when planning our driving routes for removals that we undertake by maximising efficiency and therefore minimising the impact on the environment. We maximise space in our vehicles by packing and loading correctly to ensure that only necessary vehicles are used and return trips to and from properties are avoided therefore cutting down on fuel used and emissions created.
We ensure that all company vehicles are well maintained with daily inspections to make sure that they are operating efficiently. These checks also allow us to take preventative maintenance, which helps to minimise our environmental impact.
Recycling is one of the easiest ways for all of us to have a positive impact on the world in which we live. Recycling is very important as waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment. Harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses are released from rubbish in landfill sites. Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste. Habitat destruction and global warming are some of the affects caused by deforestation; recycling reduces the need for raw materials so that rainforests can be preserved. It is proven that huge amounts of energy are used when making products from raw materials, recycling requires much less energy and therefore helps to preserve natural resources.
At H2H we have looked at all our processes and activities to see how we can maximise our recycling in all areas of our business. In our removals we promote recycling or the re-use of packing materials by offering a free collection of boxes and paper from our customers following their removal service. Where possible we reuse the boxes but if they are damaged we will then recycle them using the local authority recycling service.
Where customers have unwanted items of furniture or white goods, we actively dispose of these items at a registered waste recycling centre so that they can be suitably recycled rather than being put into landfill.
Within our office environment we only print when required and use online documentation where possible. Any data sensitive documents that are no longer required are safely recycled and any general used office paper is re-used as scrap paper to maximise use.
A lot of our deliveries arrive on wooden pallets and where we have no use for these we send the remainder to a local company who will re-use them to distribute their products, hereby increasing the use of the pallets and avoiding unnecessary waste being produced.
Minimised energy usage
Making small changes to working practises within an organisation can have a big impact on energy usage, which in turn has a positive impact on reducing your environmental footprint.
Within our self-storage units and warehouse, we have installed LED sensor lights which only come on when movement is detected. For any manual lights within the office area we ensure that these are only used when required and switched off when not in use.
For movement of containers within our warehouse we use a forklift truck which runs on gas. Like our removal vehicles we ensure that the forklift truck is checked before each use and routinely inspected at regular intervals to ensure that it is operating efficiently. The gas is turned off after every use and a local company is used to re-fill the bottle when required.
It is our policy to minimise our impact on the environment wherever possible by ensuring that environmental issues and awareness remains a part of every decision we make. Our hope is that by making changes to our business we can be part of a global initiative to protect our planet for future generations.
